Waseem is originally from Pakistan and is currently seeking asylum in the UK. As someone new to the country, he has been looking for opportunities to meet people, practise his English, and become more involved in his local community. When he heard about the LEAH gardening trip to Bushy Park, Waseem was eager to take part. The trip offered a chance to explore volunteering, enjoy nature, and experience a peaceful and welcoming environment.
The Trip
On the morning of the trip, Waseem joined other LEAH students at the meeting point, where Savannah, our ESOL and Activities Coordinator, welcomed everyone and guided them to the Bushy Park Learning Centre. Although some students felt a little nervous at first, the friendly atmosphere and warm introductions soon helped everyone feel comfortable and ready to get started.
Waseem began the day by helping to clear the grounds, working carefully alongside others to prepare the area for new planting. Later, he supported another participant in securing wooden pillars into the ground, a task that required teamwork and communication. He approached each activity with enthusiasm and focus, showing a strong sense of cooperation and willingness to learn.
During the group’s tea and sandwich break, Waseem enjoyed chatting with others and practising his English in a relaxed setting. His favourite part of the day, however, was talking to Fiona, the Volunteer Officer at Bushy Park. He described the garden as “a peaceful place” and said he found the surroundings “very beautiful.” Waseem also mentioned how much he liked the photos taken of him during the activities – a reminder of a meaningful and enjoyable day.
Reflection and Outcome
Before the trip, Waseem said he felt excited. Afterwards, he reflected that he felt calm, happy, and proud of his contribution, saying, “I would love to return again.”
The experience gave Waseem the chance to engage in a hands-on volunteering activity, connect with others, and enjoy a sense of peace and achievement. It also helped boost his confidence and sense of belonging in his new community.
